Garden Update 7/5-7/9

This week I had a lot of exciting things happening in the garden!  Nasturtiums and Tomatoes and Cucumbers Oh My!

Lets start with my favorite discovery… Everyone who reads my blog regularlyknows about my tomato woes.  Yellowing leaves, weird spots, dog digging in the pots… the list goes on and on.  So imagine my surprise this weekend when I found these babies growing on my Big Boy plant!  I was convinced that the Big Boy, Brandywine and Jubliee plants weren’t going to give me any fruit this year so I went to work planting several other plants to insure that I would have lots of tomatoes this season.

Upon further inspection I found this guy on my Brandywine plant… woohoo!!  The plants still look horrible but at least they are producing!

Here is our newest addition… Mr Stripey!!  How could I resist a tomato named Mr. Stripey!  As I mention I’ve been planting additional tomatoes because I was certain that the other three wouldn’t produce anything. When I planted this guy I did my homework and used every trick I could find to insure that he wouldn’t end up like the other two.  Kitchen Stewartship has a great article on tomato care.  This guy got the full treatment… Banana Peels, powdered milk, sugar, baking soda and epsom salt!  I even planted him on his side which I’ve never done before.

Absinthe and and Dwarf Champion tomato plants and Genovese Basil… still small but looking great!

It’s now official the Cucumber plant is now taller than the trellis.  Everyday I look at it it seems to grow at least 2-3 inches.

I am beginning to this we have a hornets nest nearby… there are so many of these little guys around the garden and the trash cans.

The Nasturtiums are finally beginning to flower!

Its looking like you are going to have oodles & oodles of tomatoes!!! We have a veggie garden growing as well. It has two different tomato plants…..one is an heirloom and the other, we honnestly do not know what kind it is yet! The unknown one is turning out to be huge…its over four feet tall already and has at least a dozen green tomatoes on it so far. We also have an artichoke, red & yellow bell pepper, Japanese eggplant, zucchini & crooked neck squash plants, along with a bunch of herbs…..oh yea, and my kidlet’s strawberry plant! :> Soooo….what are you going to do with all those ‘maters?! :>:> Hope you are having a great week!

Great pics and good for you on the garden success – If I could just keep the squirrels out of my flower pots, I might have some success myself :)

  7. Yea for garden success!! Our garden this year looks pathetic, but we are still moving along. It’s a process of learning the land & gaining our green thumbs. And it looks like you’re doing a darn good job :)
