Garden Update – 8/23 – 8/29
This week I harvested the last of the cucumbers and a few more tomatoes. I’m debating what to do with the cucumbers I’ve already pickled 3 jars so I’ve got to come up with a different recipe for them!
He is another tiny watermelon, so far we’ve had 6-7 of these little guys throughout the summer all of them ended up drying up and then dieing so I don’t have very high hopes for this little one!
My sunflowers are taking over the side walk! I really never thought they would get that big, had I known I would of found a more suitable home for them.
I also harvested some basil, swiss chard and the last of the jalapenos. I planned on starting my fall planning over the weekend and only acomplished a little of it. I planted the Cauliflower and Cabbage and I still need to plant some Radishes, Kale, Carrots and a few different Lettuces.
As usual Zombie has been a monster and tore up all my cornflowers and is still doing as much damage to whats left of my tomato plants!

Your cucumbers are large! And glad to see that you’re getting some green cukes now instead of orange.
The tiny watermelon babies are dying probably because they are not getting properly pollinated. Do you have enough bees or other pollinating insects in your garden? If not, you might try hand pollinating some of your female flowers to see if the babe melons will grow.
Your Zombie is so adorable, and looks totally innocent of all the garden crimes you’re accusing him of!

The orange Cucs were so strange, I planted two burpee picklers and out of the two plants I only got 3 orange cucs. I also had two straight eights and those are doing great I have 5 sitting on my table as we speak! As for the watermelons the one in the picture already died just as I thought but I noticed another one three times the size so crossing fingers that one will make it. About the bees we have TONS too many I can’t walk back there with out running away at some point! Not to mention the dog got stung a couple weeks ago (her face swelled up) I think we might have a hornets nest near by!
My watermelons were a big flop! Such a bummer. I love them and was looking forward to picking my own this year

I have been pickling cukes like crazy… my family loves them. I don’t know what else to do with them.
Too bad and so strange about your watermelons?? I wonder what is wrong with them.
visiting from TGP
I wish I had more ways to store them. I have so many and they are so delicious but I fear we maybe all pickled out soon!
My dogs have made me a very creative gardener–we have quite a collection of wire barriers around here. I can’t resist those sweet little dog faces no matter what they do!

Hehe If you’d ask my bf he’s tell you forget the fences get rid of the dog! Me on the other hand I’m busy plotting how to get another one!!
I found your blog in Blotanical – very nice, I know what you mean about Sun Flowers – they can grow to be quite huge!

The things we put up with for dogs…I’m looking at three new holes in the yard today.:-) I think thyme2garden is right- lack of pollination. It happened with some of my pumpkins this year, too, but the squash have been great.
Thanks for linking to the TGP!
